napa valley estate winery

Location: Napa, California
Architect: Norman Wong Architects
Builder: Grassi Construction

Riechers Spence was retained to assist in construction of a 35 acre vineyard on 3 parcels, as well as a 20,000 gallon per year winery on in Napa County.

The proposed roadway leading to the winery was mostly located on an extremely flat ridgeline, creating standing water. The project had an abundance of rock available from the construction of the wine cave, and we incorporated a French drain system within the roadway shoulder running along each side of the road. This has alleviated the water problem and created a use for the rock. A blind turn near the entrance to the project on the existing 10 foot wide road was required by the fire department to be 20 feet wide. Rather than add 10 feet to the roadway and remove existing trees, we designed a 10 foot road along a path that saved the trees. The fire department was pleased for the access and the owner was pleased the habitat was saved. The winery was also planning on softening all water before it entered the winery. We were concerned the softening byproduct would require area for underground disposal unavailable on this site. RSA recommended treating water for the tasting room, and using the well water directly for washing out barrels, etc. This significantly reduced backwash brine, which is designed to run to the underground leach field.
